The Stairs of Strength

(Excerpt from her newly released book entitled “Drawn to Destiny”)

By Dr. Yvonne Capehart

A few years ago I had an awesome prophetic experience that changed my life and increased my faith to walk out my destiny in God’s timing.  It happened in the following way.

I was invited to attend a prayer presbytery, where prophets gather to speak into the lives of those willing to listen to words of direction given specifically for them.  At the time, I was not familiar with this approach to the prophetic realm.  After careful consideration, I chose not to participate in the presbytery.

Just before the prophets were about to end their session, someone came to me and said, “Please, I really believe you should go in.”  I walked to the back of the church and entered a small room filled with prophets and prophetesses basking in the presence of the Lord.  There was a gleam of God’s glory on their faces.  I wondered if they could all tell that I was not comfortable with this idea.

Within moments, a young man, who identified himself as a prophet from Atlanta, Georgia, began to tell me that the Lord had sent me there to receive a word from Him.  As he began to speak, I immediately felt the presence of the Lord overtake me.

He said, “Daughter think it not strange that I allowed you to see an open door and experience the joy of the view and not allow you to walk through it.  You see, what you

think is a door slammed shut by the enemy is really a door opened by destiny.”

He went on to confirm a very serious situation I had just faced in my ministry.  God had allowed me to experience something that I fully expected to be an overnight success, but it had turned into an instant fizzle, and it had been done publicly.  God let me know through that young man, that he knew all about it.

The next words the young prophet spoke truly changed my life.  He stated that it was not the will of God for me to become and overnight success in ministry, but it was His will that I maintain a lifetime of mounting success.

He explained it like this, “God has decided for you not to take the elevator ride to the high places in Him, instead, He has placed you on the stairs. By taking the stairs, it will take you much longer to reach your destination, but you’ll never learn on the quick elevator ride.

Although the elevator ride would cause you to get to your destination at a much faster pace, once you’ve arrived, you would quickly discover that you were not prepared to stay in the race.  Your walk on the stairs will cause you to become very tired and weary at times, but it is in these times that you will learn to rest and trust in the strength of God.”  The more the man spoke, the greater the presence of the Lord became, and I soon found myself on the floor weeping in God’s presence.

The prophet finally concluded: “God will allow you to have a powerful experience on the stairs.  Each step will teach you a great principle that will become an important foundation for the future, the time when you finally stand in your destiny.  When he had finished, someone handed me an audio recording of the entire powerful prophetic word, and I was able to review if periodically and learn more.

At pivotal points in my life, I began to take steps toward my God-oriented destiny, and I realized that the prophecy was true.  The steps are not always easy, but the lessons of life presented on the stairs can bring an awesome assurance of the anointing that awaits us in future.

Recently, I left my room in a hotel and was on my way down to the lobby.  Of course, I took the elevator.  Although this word of prophecy had been given to me a few years ago, it was only at that moment that the words about the stairs became clear to me.

As I approached the elevator that day my eyes locked onto a sign posted alongside it.  It read, “in case of fire, take the stairs.”  Tears began to stream down my face as I heard the voice of the lord speaking to me.  He said, “You see, when there’s a fire, you can get stuck on the elevator and lose your life, but if you’re caught in a fire on the stairs, you can simply keep on running.”  What a powerful word that was from the Lord!  If you want to arrive at your destiny, you may want to consider the stairs.  It may take you longer, but in case of a fiery trial, you can simply keep on running.
